District extends closure through April 8 to align with new Kaufman County shelter in place order

Crandall ISD has extended its closure date through April 8, aligning to the shelter in place order issued today by Kaufman County Judge Hal Richards. CISD announced March 17 it would remain closed through April 6 but continue evaluating that date in conjunction with government and health officials.

According to Dr. Wendy Eldredge, CISD superintendent, the order was expected after ongoing discussion with Kaufman County officials and area school districts.

“Our elected leaders are acting on the best interests of Kaufman County residents and that has been clear from the outset of discussions,” Eldredge said. “Judge Richards has done a wonderful job keeping school districts informed and considering what is right for the health and safety of our students, staff and community.”

Eldredge was hopeful the tentative return date of April 6 would be obtainable but as the coronavirus has spread throughout the country, she said it is clear school closures will extend farther than what most had hoped. The district will keep staff and families informed of changes and resources on its Coronavirus Updates page.

CISD returned from its spring break Monday and teachers have been working with families in preparation for tomorrow’s launch of CISD HOMEroom, an online learning resource designed with parents and students in mind.

The district has also been serving meals to students at curbside locations. That will also continue throughout the closure.

“I could not be more proud of the effort put forth by our teachers and staff,” Eldredge said. “Many began working on this transition to at-home learning while they were on spring break. The support from our parents has been phenomenal as well. We are all in this together.”

Richards’ order requires Kaufman County citizens to stay home unless it is absolutely necessary to leave. Residents will be able to buy groceries, get medical supplies and do outdoor exercise such as running or hiking.
