Texas law requires all students in Pre-Kindergarten classes 4 years of age or older, and all kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade students to be vision and hearing screened every year.
State law also requires all students in 5th or 6th and 8th or 9th grades to be screened for scoliosis. Crandall ISD has chosen to screen grades 5 and 8.
Also all students in 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grades are to be screened for acanthosis nigricans which is a possible precursor to Type 2 diabetes.
If a student fails a screening, they will be re-screened within 4 weeks. If they continue to fail, the child will be given a referral notice for the parent recommending they see a physician.
All screenings are completed throughout the school year, usually beginning in October.
